GAME STORIES

Sea Gulls sink No. 20 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Salisbury University football team won its fifth consecutive game, third of the year, with an impressive 35-21 win over No. 20 Christopher Newport University at POMOCO Stadium in front of a crowd of 4,829.

The Sea Gulls (3-0) ran for a season-high 400 yards and finished with 433 total yards of offense for their biggest output of the season.

"This is a big win for us," said Salisbury coach Sherman Wood after the game.

Sophomore Valdase Morris eclipsed the century mark as he ran for a team-high 104 yards on seven carries. Junior Ronnie Shockley and senior co-captain Jamar Garner added 88 yards and 86 yards each, respectively, on the ground.

The Sea Gulls struck first as they scored on back-to-back possessions in the first quarter to take an early 14-0 lead. Garner took an option pitch 22 yards for the first score and Morris capped off a nine play, 90-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.

The Captains (1-2) answered in the second quarter with an 85-yard drive that ended with a Mike Thomas 1-yard plunge to cut the SU lead to seven, 14-7.

Garner found the end zone for a second time late in the first half as he scored from 25 yards out to give the maroon and gold a 21-7 lead.

The Sea Gulls threaten again with less then one minute to play in the half but a fumble deep in CNU's territory halted the drive and sent SU to the locker room with a 14-point advantage.

Christopher Newport took the first drive of the second half to the Salisbury 22-yard line but a Joe Galloway (two sacks) sack set up second down and long that resulted in a Jon Turner (eight tackles) interception. CNU appeared to cut the SU led to eight points on its next drive as backup quarterback Alex Brown found Jessie Bradshaw on a halfback option pass for a 37-yard score but a holding penalty negated the score and the Captains were forced to punt five plays later.

The Sea Gulls' next possession mirrored CNU's previous possession as an 81-yard Morris touchdown run was called back because of a holding call.

Salisbury finally scored in the second half as Morris raced 49 yards for the his second touchdown to give SU a 28-7 lead.

On the ensuing CNU possession the Sea Gulls' Justin Sykes blocked the Captains fourth down punt attempt which set up a Shelby Fisher (five carries, 55 yards) six-yard touchdown run to put the maroon and gold up 35-7.

Quarterback Ronnie Curley finished with 63 yards on 12 rushing attempts and Chris Loveland and Justin Acker each recorded a team-high 12 tackles. Sophomore Bobby Sheahin accounted for all of the team passing yards as he was a perfect 3-for-3 for 33 yards.

The Captains added two late scores, a 20-yard run and 21-yard pass, in the fourth quarter to pull within 14 points, 35-21.

The Sea Gulls improve to 3-0 all-time at POMOCO Stadium as they avenged last season's 23-17 overtime defeat at Sea Gull Stadium. SU is now 4-2 against CNU all-time.

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, September 22, as they host Delaware Valley College at Sea Gull Stadium. The rematch of last season's ECAC South Atlantic Bowl Championship game will kick-off at 1 p.m. SU defeated DVC 15-9 last season.

"Those guys will comeback with a lot of fire from last year," said Wood. "We need to step it up on the defensive side of the ball and our special teams will need to have a good game."

With the game tied at 13-13 midway through the third, the Frostburg State special teams unit setup the game-winning touchdown. Sophomore Chindy Agugua (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) blocked a Jeff Nagel punt at the RMC seven-yard line and senior Johan Owens (Baltimore, Md./City College) took the ball down to the five to give the offense outstanding field position.

However, on fourth and one from the one, senior quarterback Andre Dixon crossed the goal line and sophomore Nathan Menhorn (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) tacked on the extra point as FSU went ahead 20-13.

Two plays later, Young ran for 39 yards down to the RMC five, setting up his first TD of the game.

The Yellow Jackets scored three times in the second quarter, including two field goals from Scott Shope (21 and 26 yards) and a 10-yard touchdown run by Zak Thornton at 10:15.

BROCKPORT, NY - Senior Matt McCormick (Peru, NY/Peru) and junior Garet Lynch (Valley Stream, NY/Springfield Gardens) both rushed for over 100 yards and each scored a touchdown to lead the SUNY Brockport Football team to a convincing 28-14 win over rival SUNY Cortland on Homecoming Weekend at Bob Boozer Field at Special Olympics Stadium on Saturday in Brockport.

After a scoreless first quarter, The Golden Eagles (1-1) opened the scoring on a three-play 41-yard drive capped off when quarterback Zack Luke (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge) found senior Mike Maciejewski (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) on a 39-yard pass over the middle as Maciejewski beat the secondary to the endzone giving the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead.

SUNY Cortland (1-1) struggled moving the ball against a tough Golden Eagle defense but did get on the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter when SUNY Brockport freshman kicker Jeff Cook (Penfield, NY/Penfield) had his 33-yard field-goal attempt blocked and returned 77 yards by Jim Smith for a touchdown cutting the Brockport lead to 13-7 with just under 14 minutes to go in the fourth quarter.

Wesley pulls away in second half for road win

CHESTER, Pa. - A 89-yard kick return by Larry Beavers to open the second half broke a 17-17 halftime tie and propelled Wesley College to a 31-17 win over Widener in the Wolverines road opener.

In addition to Beavers' special teams heroics, Mike Pennewell racked up 181 yards on 12 carries in the final two quarters - after not carrying the ball in the first half - to help lead the second half surge.

The first half featured the two teams trade big plays.  Widener scored on the game's opening drive.  Matt Campbell hit Tim Kilkenny on a 33-yard scoring strike less than three minutes in.  The point after failed and Widener led 6-0

Wesley struck back quickly with a touchdown on short pass from Jason Schatz to Beavers that the wideout turned into a 79-yard score to give Wesley a 7-6 lead with just over eight minutes left in the half.

In the second quarter, Wesley put together a 10-play drive that stalled with a fourth and 21 from the Widener 29.  Just outside of the field goal range, the Wolverines elected to go for it and Schatz hit Michael Clarke, who pulled in a one-handed grab and scampered to the endzone for a 14-6 Wesley lead.

The Pride answered Wesley's 11-play, 77-yard drive with a 14-play, 68-yard drive of their own, gobbling up 6:26 and ending with a five-yard strike from Campbell to Jamie Schild.  Marc Patricelli's rushed for two to knot the game at 14-14.

The Wolverines next drive featured a 29-yard run by Alpha Koroma and ended with Collin Blugis booting a 34-yard field goal for a 17-14 lead.

Tom Laurich's 18-yarder as time expired tied the score entering the half.  Widener had advanced the ball to the one yardline, but Wesley tightened its defense and stonewalled two Pride rushes to force the kick.

Beavers did not let the tie score stand for long, running back the opening kick of the second half to give Wesley the lead for good.

Neither team scored again until Schatz finished a 10-play, 84-yard drive with a two-yard pass that Steve Scanlon leaped, grabbed and got his feet down to give Wesley the 31-17 advantage.  Pennewell accounted for 73 yards on the drive, including a 55-yard run.

Tim Stewart put an end to Widener's comeback hopes with an interception at the one yardline.

Schatz tossed for three touchdowns for the third straight game and finished with 233 yards.  Beavers tallied 113 yards receiving on three grabs.  The Wolverines also rushed for a total of 273 yards as a team.  In addition to opening huge holes for the running backs, the offensive line also kept Widener from getting to Schatz all evening. Josh Jones led the Wolverines with 11 stops.

Campbell threw 44 passes for Widener, completing 25 for 249 yards and two scores.  Schild caught seven passes for 59 yards.  T.D. Davis and John Martorell led the Pride with seven tackles apiece.
