GOLDEN EAGLES IMPROVE TO 2-1 WITH 38-7 WIN

Garet Lynch rushed for 111 yards and scored one touchdown

Junior Garet Lynch (Valley Stream, NY/Springfield Gardens) rushed for 111 yards on only 16 carries and scored a touchdown to lead the SUNY Brockport Football team to a 38-7 win over Atlantic Central Football Conference (ACFC) opponent Frostburg State on Saturday at Bob Boozer Field at Special Olympics Stadium in Brockport.

The Golden Eagles (2-1, 1-1 ACFC) took the opening kickoff and drove 51 yards capped off by a Matt McCormick (Peru, NY/Peru) six-yard touchdown run giving the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Bobcats drove the ensuing kickoff into Brockport territory before junior Josh Day (Hornell, NY/Hornell) broke through the middle and blocked a 33-yard field goal attempt stopping the Frostburg St. drive.

Brockport took over at its own 23-yard line and drove 77 yards ending on a Mike Maciejewski (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) 37-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Zack Luke (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge) pushing the Golden Eagle lead to 14-0 with four and a half minutes to go in the first quarter. Luke finished the game 17-24 passing with 225 yards and three touchdown passes. Luke moved into third all-time in school history with 2,861 career passing yards.

In the second quarter, the Golden Eagle offense continued to move the ball at will as they strung together drives of 80 yards and 55 yards both resulting in touchdowns. Lynch found paydirt with a 16-yard run finishing off the eight play, 80-yard drive extending the lead to 21-0 and wide receiver Mike Smith (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Luke pushing the Golden Eagle lead to 28-0 with just over a minute to play in the first half.

Frostburg State (1-2, 0-2 ACFC) was held to just 119 total yards and only five first downs in the first half. In the second half, the Golden Eagles forced a three-and-out to begin the half and took over at their own 12 yard line. Ten plays later, Smith caught his second touchdown pass of the game when Luke found the receiver on a crossing route and sprinted into the endzone for a 35-0 lead with just under 10 minutes to play in the third quarter.

After a Brockport turnover, Frostburg State capitalized on an eight yard touchdown pass from quarterback Andre Dixon to Fred Howze cutting the lead to 35-7 with fewer than four minutes to play in the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, freshman Jeff Cook (Penfield, NY/Penfield) connected on a 28-yard field goal to account for the 38-7 final score.

Cook hit all five of his point-after-attempts keeping his streak of consecutive PAT's intact at 48 dating back to his high school career.

Also in the fourth quarter, Bobcat punter Nicholas Payne booted a Frostburg St. and ACFC record 82-yard punt breaking the old records of 71 yards set back in 1979 and the ACFC record of 76 yards set by Frostburg's Tom Vanik against Montclair in 2005.

Offensively, Lynch finished with a game-high 111 rushing yards while teammate McCormick rushed for 78 yards. Lynch moved into 10th in Brockport school history in career rushing yards on the day. Wide receivers Smith and Maciejewski combined to catch 12 passes for 154 yards and three touchdowns for the Golden Eagles. Brockport outgained the Bobcats 486-236 in total yards and had 27 first downs compared to nine for Frostburg St.

Defensively, junior Kyle Lackie (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and senior Dale Buck (Oakfield, NY/Oakfield-Alabama) registered 10 tackles each for Brockport.

The Golden Eagles return to action at 1 pm Saturday, September 29 as Brockport hits the road for the first time this season with a trip to Ithaca to square off against the Bombers.

BUILDERS STUNG BY WASPS 35-14

EMORY, VA. - Emory & Henry quarterback Daniel Booher may have only completed five passes against the Apprentice School on Saturday, but he made sure they counted.

Booher threw for 163 yards and four touchdowns as Emory & Henry College defeated the Builders 35-14 in front of over 5,000 fans at Fullerton Field in the home opener for the Wasps.

Apprentice School (1-2) struck first as senior quarterback Kyle Franklin connected with fellow senior Travis Reid on a 35-yard scoring strike on the Builders second possession.  The drive started after senior Franako Smith picked off a pass on the Builder 35.  Reid finished the day with seven catches for 67 yards and a touchdown to raise his career reception yards total to 2,002.  He is the second Builder in the modern era to break 2,000 career receiving yards.

From that point, the Wasps took control of the game behind Booher.  He connected with Jonathan Hawkins on a 40-yard scoring pass and a 28-yard strike while Cain Ringstaff barreled his way in from the two with six minutes left in the first half for a 21-7 Emory & Henry advantage.

In the second half, Booher connected with Gavin Haynes on a 42-yard scoring pass to go ahead 28-7 with 11:29 left in the third quarter.  The Builders showed some signs in the fourth quarter as for the third straight game, senior Tony Scott blocked a punt and this one was returned 41 yards by Joe Bruce to cut the deficit to 28-14 with 11:58 left in the game.

The Wasps put any hope away on the next drive as Booher found Ryan Mettinger on a 37-yard touchdown pass with 9:37 left to lock up the victory.

Franklin threw for 85 yards completing 11-of-18 for the Builders who were outgained 458-148.  Emory & Henry was paced rushing by Matt Gillespie who ran 18 times for 124 yards and Ringstaff who ran for 106 yards on 14 carries.

The road does not get easier for the Builders as they go back into Atlantic Central Football Conference action next week at 18th-ranked Salisbury University at 1 pm.

NO. 18 SALISBURY ROLLS OVER DELAWARE VALLEY

SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 18 Salisbury University football team scored 19 fourth quarter points to put away Delaware Valley College 36-16 Saturday afternoon in front of 1,548 at Sea Gull Stadium.

The Sea Gulls (4-0) had their backs to the wall in the third quarter as DVC led 14-10 and were set to add more. DVC's Jake Sheffield was 1-yard from giving the Aggies (0-3) a two-score cushion but senior nose guard Joe Galloway caused Sheffield to fumble as he went air born and lost the ball, which was recovered by junior Justin Acker in the end zone.

Salisbury capitalized on the turnover as the Sea Gulls needed two plays to go 80 yards and swing the game in favor of the maroon and gold.

Senior Jamar Garner was the ball carrier on both plays. Garner's second rush saw him break a tackle and sprint 59 yards into the end zone and give SU a 17-14 lead.

Garner finished the afternoon with a game-high 127 yards on nine carries for a 14.1 yard per rush attempt and two touchdowns.

The Salisbury defense forced four Aggies turnovers which included three interceptions. Juniors Ryan Hesnan, Greg Miletic and Paul Cynewski all picked off DVC quarterback Mike Isgro. Cynewski returned his pick for a team-long 34 yards in the fourth quarter.

Delaware Valley scored the game's first touchdown early in the second quarter as Isgro connected with Joel Foreman on a 24-yard pass. The Sea Gulls quickly answered as junior Shelby Fisher (11 carries, 58 yards) scored his first of two touchdowns on the afternoon to tie the score at seven.

Senior Brendan Kincaid booted a career-high 46-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter to send the Gulls into intermission up 10-7. Quarterback Bobby Sheahin orchestrated the two-minute drill as he went 3-for-4 for 37 yards to set up the long distance Kincaid kick.

The Aggies dominated the time of possession in the third quarter with a

16 play, 82-yard drive capped off by an Isgro to Jimmy Smith touchdown pass to open the quarter. Isgro finished the day 21-of-38, 181 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

DVC recovered the following kickoff as Steve Giovacchini's attempt at a squibb kick bounced off an SU player and was recovered by the Aggies around midfield. Delaware Valley marched down to the SU 1-yard line but Galloway jarred the ball loose to halt the DVC drive. The Aggies held the ball for the first 10:33 of the third quarter.

Fisher and Ronnie Shockley scored on back-to-back possessions for the Gulls in the fourth quarter as both superbacks scored from seven yards out. DVC tacked on two-points when DVC linebacker Zach McCainn blocked Kincaid's point after attempt at the 10:11 mark. Aggie Charles Squitiere grabbed the ball and returned it the distance for two-points.

Garner scored the final touchdown of the afternoon on a 12-yard run with less than one minute to play to give SU the 36-16 win. The point after attempt by Andrew Geisert was blocked by McCainn as well.

Junior Matthew Bookard led Salisbury with 12 tackles and Hesnan finished with nine tackles, two for loss and one pass breakup.  Shockley had 83 yards rushing on 17 attempts as the team finished with 277 yards on the ground.

The Sea Gulls return to action on Saturday, September 29, as they host the Apprentice School on Family Weekend at SU. The Atlantic Central Football Conference game will begin at 1 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.

WESLEY FALLS AT HOME TO MONTCLAIR STATE

Dover, DE - Wesley College (3-1) fell to visiting Montclair State University (3-0) by the score 27-26 in quite possibly the strangest day of college football in recent memory.  The MSU Redhawks returned the opening kickoff of the second half 89-yards to take the lead at 27-24 and used a bend but don't break defense to shut out the powerful Wesley offensive attack in the second half to earn the road victory.

Slated for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff, the much anticipated match-up between the 7th ranked Wolverines and the newly ranked 24th Redhawks was shelved to 4 p.m. due to lack of an officiating crew.  The much disappointed crowd sent packing for their cars were suddenly forced to run for cover as a strong line of thunderstorms spawned out of nowhere which would have most likely forced a postponement due to lightning.

Once the officiating crew was settled in and the kickoff in the air, Wesley marched down the field on their opening possession using 10 plays to cover 50 yards finishing with an 11-yard touchdown run by Mike Pennewell.  Pennewell, who rushed for 181-yards in the second half vs. Widener finished today with 213 yards and two scores.  Wesley kicker Collin Blugis added the extra point giving Wesley the 7-0 advantage at 10:43 of the first quarter.

Showing some special teams moxie of their own, the Redhawks returned the ensuing kickoff to the 50-yardline.  With that momentum, MSU used its own 10-play drive to knot the score at 7-7.  Quarterback Mike Jump pushed the ball across the line with a sneak and Redhawk kicker Capozzoli added the extra point.

Wesley then took their next possession down to the Redhawks 3-yardline when the MSU defense stiffened and forced a 20-yard Collin Blugis field goal putting Wesley on top 10-7 with 1:39 left in the first quarter.

MSU jumped back into the lead only 6 seconds into the 2nd quarter on a 43-yard strike from Jump to wide out Fronjian, however the extra point attempt was blocked by the Wolverines All-American defensive end Bryan Robinson leaving the Redhawks with a 13-10 advantage.  With another change in the lead, it looked like a shootout was on for the rest of the game.

Much to the disheartening of the MSU faithful, Mike Pennewell tore the lead back from the Redhawks on the first play of Wesley's next possession galloping 62-yards for the score.  Blugis added the extra point to put Wesley out front again 17-13, and heads were starting to spin.

The Redhawks inched closer on their next possession on a 22-yard Capozzoli field goal at 11:20 of the second.

Wesley however, extended their lead to 24-16 on another big play by standout receiver Larry Beavers.  Beavers simply ran by his covering corner and caught the offering in stride from Jason Schatz.  Beavers ended the game with 3 catches for 77 yards and the score.

The Wesley defense stood its ground on the next possession forcing and MSU punt, but it was muffed by Blair Newman on the Wolverine 18-yard line and recovered by the Redhawks.  Much to their credit, the Wesley defense withstood the change in the momentum forcing a 36-yard field goal attempt by Capozzoli which found its way through the uprights.  At the sound of the half time gun, Wesley led the visiting Redhawks 24-19.

Used to starting off the second half with a bang, the Wolverines were stunned when MSU return man J. Bliss slashed and weaved his way through the Wesley coverage on his way to an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.  Wesley has opened two second halves with kickoff returns for scores this season.  Capitalizing on the confusion, MSU quickly and successfully passed for the two point conversion to put them on top at 27-24.

At this point the Redhawks defense stepped up its resolve and refused to let the explosive Wesley offense into the endzone.  In fact Wesley had many opportunities and excellent starting field position in the second half but was unable to put together successful scoring drives.

With the score still standing in MSU's favor, the Wolverines embarked on a long 13-play drive in the final 3 minutes of the game.  Wesley earned their way to the Redhawks 14-yardline, but Schatz was intercepted on the goal line by C. Hunt who stepped in front of a pass intended for Jon Lanouette.  Schatz finished the day 17 of 37 with 204 yards one score and three INT's.

Hunt returned the ball to the MSU 20-yard line and it looked like the game was over.  However, due to some miscommunication and well called time outs on Wesley's behalf, the Redhawks were forced to punt with 7 seconds remaining in the game.  In an effort to run out the clock, the MSU punter ran back into the end zone for safety, but there still remained 1 second on the clock.

Now down 27-26, Wesley still had one chance left to come out on top.  MSU kicked the ball from their own 20-yard line after the safety, but punter M. Lajterman shanked it to the right and out of bounds with out running the last second off the clock.

Wesley elected to take the ball at the out of bounds spot, giving them yet one more shot at the end zone from their own 46-yard line.  However, Schatz's pass was knocked down at the goal line and MSU celebrated a well-earned victory at 27-26.

The loss, Wesley's first at home since they installed the artificial turf surface, leaves the Wolverines at 3-1.  Next week, Wesley hosts Huntingdon (Ala.) at Wolverine Stadium with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
