The SUNY Brockport Football team dropped an Atlantic Central
Football
Conference (ACFC) contest to #10-ranked Wesley College (DE)
45-21 on Saturday at Bob Boozer Field at Special Olympics Stadium
on
Senior Day.
Brockport recognized its 17 seniors before the game; Mike
Maciejewski
(Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), Mike Smith (Webster, NY/Webster
Schroeder), Kyle Lackie (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), Matt
Rice
(Shortsville, NY/Red Jacket), Matt McCormick (Peru, NY/Peru),
Nick
Duchscheer (Youngstown, NY/Lewiston-Porter), Jake DerCola
(Clyde,
NY/Clyde-Savannah), Tim Beairsto (Brockport, NY/Brockport),
Scott
Kaniecki (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island), Matthew Bennink
(Clymer,
NY/Clymer), Mike Askins (Shortsville, NY/Red Jacket), Gary Bohl
(Slingerlands, NY/Guilderland), Joel Franklin (Rochester,
NY/Greece
Athena), Chad Languish (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem), Dale Buck
(Oakfield,
NY/Oakfield-Alabama), Mark Chavoustie (Webster,
NY/Webster-Schroeder),
and Mike Burgess (Watertown, NY/South Jefferson).
The Wesley (7-1, 3-0 ACFC) offense compiled 508 total yards
including
288 on the ground compared to the Golden Eagles 249 total yards and
79
rushing. The game featured 24 penalties, 12 for each team.
The Golden Eagles (3-4 overall, 1-2 ACFC) fell behind early when
the
Wolverines drove 75 yards on eight plays resulting in a 27-yard
pass
from quarterback Jason Schatz to Jon Lanouette for a 7-0 Wesley
lead
with just under seven minutes to play in the first quarter.
The Golden
Eagles kick-returner Cevon Carver (Bronx, NY/Dewitt Clinton) took
the
ensuing kick-off 91 yards for the touchdown tying the score 7-7.
Carver
muffed the kick at the Brockport 10-yard line, but then picked up
the
loose ball, made one defender miss and raced up the sideline
untouched
for the first touchdown on a kick return for the Golden Eagles
since
Brian Wise returned a kick 97 yards for a touchdown in 2003.
The Wolverine offense took their next possession deep into
Brockport
territory but the Golden Eagles defense stiffened and forced a
30-yard
field goal giving Wesley the 10-7 lead with 15 seconds remaining in
the
first quarter.
Brockport put together its best drive of the game with a
15-play,
75-yard drive capped off by a one-yard touchdown run by senior Gary
Bohl
(Slingerlands, NY/Guilderland). Quarterback Jake Graci
(Farnham,
NY/Lake Shore) converted on a third and 17 to keep the drive going
when
he rolled out to his right and found an open Mark Wolfe
(Brockport,
NY/Brockport) down the middle for a 22-yard gain. Bohl's
touchdown run
was his first of the season and gave the Golden Eagles a 14-10 lead
with
nine minutes to go in the first half.
Wesley would answer with a three-play, 58-yard touchdown drive
when
Schatz found Michael Clark in the corner of the endzone for a
28-yard
touchdown pass giving the Wolverines the 17-14 lead, one they would
not
relinquish.
After a Brockport fumble deep in Wesley territory and five
straight
punts between the two teams, the Wolverines led 17-14 at
halftime. In
the second half, Wesley's high-powered offense began to ware down
the
Brockport defense and posted 21 points in the third quarter
extending
the Wesley lead to 38-14 with just over a minute to play in the
quarter.
The Golden Eagles would crack the scoreboard one last time
early in
the fourth quarter when Mike Maciejewski reeled in a 25-yard
touchdown
pass on a fourth and 13 cutting the Wesley lead to 38-21 with 13
minutes
to play. The Wolverines would tack on a late touchdown
accounting for
the 45-21 final score.
Offensively, Matt McCormick (Peru, NY/Peru) led the Golden
Eagles with
51 rushing yards. The quarterback tandem of Graci and Jake
DerCola
(Clyde, NY/Clyde-Savannah) split time again this week and the
two
combined for 22-44 passing for 190 yards and a touchdown pass
by
DerCola. Wesley was led by running back Mike Pennewell who
had a
game-high 158 yards on 25 carries. Quarterback Jason Schatz
finished
15-24 passing for 220 yards and three touchdowns for the
Wolverines.
Defensively, junior Josh Day (Hornell, NY/Hornell) registered
a
game-high 13 tackles while teammate Jarrett Woodfork (Syracuse,
NY/Bishop Ludden) finished with 12 stops.
RECORDS FALL AS SU SCORES 79 POINTS ON HOMECOMING
SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 9 Salisbury University football
team set
four team records in its 79-20 win over Becker College Saturday
afternoon in front of a crowd of 2,465 on Homecoming weekend.
The Sea Gulls (8-0) ran for 596 yards which broke the previous
record
of 563 yards set on November 15, 1975 against Frostburg State and
scored
10 rushing touchdowns to break the record of nine rushing
touchdowns set
on October 15, 1988 against Wesley. That total was also an
Atlantic Central Football Conference record smashing the old one of
477 that Salisbury had twice.
Salisbury also set new team marks in total yards with 671 and
points
with 79. The previous record for yards (633) was set in '88
against
Wesley and on October 1, 2005 Salisbury scored what was then a
school
record 77 points against Apprentice School. The 79 points are
also an ACFC record.
The maroon and gold offense averaged 11.0 yards per play which
includes
a 10.8 yards per rush average. The Sea Gulls had 17 different
players
rush the ball and had seven different players score. Junior
superback
Ronnie Shockley led the way with a three touchdown effort.
Senior kicker Brendan Kincaid had a memorable senior day as he
was a
perfect 11-of-11 on PATs to set a new school mark. Kincaid broke
a
33-year old record that was set in 1974 by Jack Young who was
9-of-9
against Gallaudet. The record was tied twice by Bill Maurer in 1986
and
1987.
For the second consecutive game the Sea Gulls had two 100-yard
rushers
as senior Jamar Garner ran for a game-high 121 yards on only
five
carries. He scored twice and had a 24.2 yards per carry
average.
Shockley rumbled for 106 yards on eight carries and had a 13.2
yards per
carry average.
SU jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead as sophomore Valdase Morris
scored
from 19 yards out on the Sea Gulls' first possession and Garner
scored
on the first-play of SU's next series from 41 yards out. Morris
finished
the game with 84 yards rushing.
Sophomore Garrett Burgess scored the first punt return touchdown
of the
season for Salisbury as he ran one back 35 yards to give SU a 21-0
lead
in the first quarter.
Becker (1-6) answered on a fourth down play with 42 seconds left
in the
quarter as Gabriel Prophet found Ryan Mercado for a 15-yard
touchdown
pass to cut the SU lead to 21-6. Prophet finished the game 14-of-28
for
125 yards and two touchdowns.
The Sea Gulls continued their offensive explosion in the second
quarter
as they ran off 28 points. Shockley scored on runs of six yards,
66
yards and four yards while junior Ronnie Curley ran one in from
eight
yards out. Curley finished the game with 57 yards rushing.
Prophet connected on his second touchdown pass as he found Levi
Smith
from 12 yards out to make the score 49-12 at the half.
The Salisbury defense totaled 16 tackles for loss for a loss of
58
yards which includes five sacks. Freshman Marcus Randolph recorded
a
game-high six tackles as junior Justin Acker picked off two
passes.
Freshman Josh Weaver registered a hat-trick as he recorded a
sack,
forced fumble and fumble recovery all on the same play.
The defense allowed only four yards rushing on 27 attempts for a
0.1
yard per rush average.
The maroon and gold managed only one score in the third quarter
but
scored 23 in the fourth quarter to set the new record. Junior
Bobby
Sheahin had a 15-yard touchdown run, sophomore Alesandro Valentino
had a
38-yard touchdown run and sophomore Nick Campanaro rounded out
the
scoring with a 21-yard run.
The defense also recorded a safety which gave Salisbury a
65-20
advantage with 8:25 left in the game.
The Sea Gulls return to action on Saturday, October 27, as they
travel
to Dover, Del. to face No. 12 Wesley in an Atlantic Central
Football
Conference game.
FROSTBURG STATE VICTORIOUS IN HOMECOMING; BEATS UNION, KY. 28-7
FROSTBURG, Md. - Senior Andre Dixon (Washington, D.C./Roosevelt)
accounted for two touchdowns and Frostburg State totaled three
rushing scores as it defeated Union (Ky.) 28-7 on Homecoming,
Saturday afternoon in front of 2,896 at Bobcat Stadium.
FSU (2-5) also celebrated senior day as 13 players helped the
Bobcats to their fourth-straight win on Homecoming.
Statistically, the game was much closer than it appeared as FSU
held a slim 16-15 edge in first downs, a 352-295 margin in total
yards and a 30:37 to 29:23 lead in time of possession. However, FSU
outrushed the Bulldogs (2-6) 238-145 and the visitors hurt
themselves with 11 penalties for 84 yards.
Frostburg State came out quickly with touchdowns on three of it
first four drives. On their first score, the Bobcats drove 80 yards
in 11 plays with Dixon pushing his way into the endzone behind his
offensive line for a one-yard touchdown as FSU took a 6-0 lead.
Sophomore Nathan Menhorn (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) booted
the extra point as Frostburg State assumed a 7-0 lead.
On its second drive, FSU jumped ahead 14-0. After holding UC to
minus three yards on three plays, the Bobcats took over on their
own 49-yard line and marched 51 yards in just seven plays for the
touchdown. Dixon, who passed for a season high 128 yards against
UC, found junior Jared McCormick (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothers
Valley) in the endzone for a 14-yard scoring pass.
On its third possession of the game, FSU missed a 25-yard field
goal after holding the Bulldogs on four downs. However, the Bobcats
made up for it on their fourth drive going 73 yards on 14 plays
covering 6:28 for their third and final touchdown of the opening
half. Freshman Anton Wade (Baltimore, Md./Patterson) handed the
hosts a 21-0 lead with a five-yard scoring run.
Midway through the third, FSU scored its third rushing touchdown of
the afternoon when senior Shanorm Young (Baltimore, Md./Polytech)
found the endzone from six yards out, capping a 14 play 73-yard
drive.
All four of the Bobcat scoring drives covered 50-plus yards.
Union scored its only touchdown with 5:51 left in the fourth
quarter when Kyle Callahan found Chris Callopy for an 11-yard
touchdown. The drive was the second longest for the Bulldogs
covering 55 yards in seven plays. UC's longest drive, 66 yards in
eight plays, was its first drive of the fourth quarter but ended
with an interception by FSU senior Johan Owens (Baltimore, Md./City
College).
Wade led the Bobcats in rushing with 90 yards on 13 carries and a
touchdown while Young finished with 69 yards on 15 carries and a

(Bowie, MD/Duval). Robertson finished with 12 total tackles, 2.0
TFL and a pass breakup while Ellis had nine stops, two for loss,
and a sack. Frazer had six tackles, two for loss and a pass
breakup.
Frostburg State travels to Westminster next Saturday for a 1:30 pm
kickoff.
BUILDERS TAKE MARINERS TROPHY WITH 60-0 VICTORY OVER MARITIME
THROGGS NECK, NY -- Sophomore Sam Arnold ran for a career high 202 yards as the Apprentice School defeated Maritime College 60-0 in the second Mariners Classic at Reinhart Field on the campus of Maritime College on Saturday.
The Apprentice School started scoring early as senior quarterback Kyle Franklin found fellow senior Travis Reid on an 18-yard scoring strike capping off a 62-yard scoring drive. Those two connected again for the third touchdown on a 24-yard scoring pass with 10:13 left in the first half. Franklin got into the scoring act himself on a 10-yard scamper sandwiching those scoring passes.
Reid ended the day with eight receptions for 160 yards and three touchdowns. His eight receptions pushed his season total to 50 which breaks his school record set last year with 48. The 160 yards pushed him past Andre Ross for the school, modern-era career yardage mark as he now stands at 2,559.
Senior Earnest Nimmo got into the scoring act with a pair of touchdown runs. His first one came following a Thomas Moultrie fumble recovery on the Maritime 29 and Nimmo capped off the drive with a two-yard plunge. The second came on an 88-yard scoring drive where he finished it on a four-yard run. Franklin found Reid on the first-play of the drive on a 73-yard pass which enabled him to break the yardage record.
The Builder defense has been opportunistic in the first half with one interception, one fumble recovery and holding the Privateers to 58 yards total offense.
The second half saw the defense step up more forcing a pair of turnovers on the first two possessions for the Privateers. On the first one, freshman Lamar Lancaster scored on a four-yard run following a Robert Hannah interception. The next touchdown was a Franklin to Reid three-yard score for Reid's second three-touchdown reception day of his career. That came as a result of a fumble eventually recovered by the Builders on the five-yardline.
In the fourth quarter J'Michael Swain capped a 13-play, 50-yard drive with a three-yard run and Lancaster had his second touchdown on a 24-yard scamper to finish an eight-play, 73-yard drive.
Maritime College entered the game ranked 19th in NCAA Division III averaging 252 yards per game and the Builders held them to 62 yards rushing and 92 yards of total offense on the day.
Arnold's 202-yard outburst was the second highest single-game total in the last 24 years of Builder football. Only a 232-yard game from Thurm Gibson against Bridgewater in 1985 stands higher in Builder history. Franklin, who connected on his first 11 passes in the game, finished 13-of-16 for a career-high 225 yards and three touchdowns.
The Builders now travel to Lynchburg, Va. next Saturday to face in-state rival Southern Virginia University.
