Beavers, Chandler Named To AFCA All-American Team
WACO, Texas - Two Atlantic Central Football Conference standouts were honored on Wednesday by being named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-American Team. Wesley College's Larry Beavers and Salisbury University's Jarrell Chandler earned spots on the honor squad after standout 2008 seasons.
Beavers became the eighth player in Wesley College school history
to earn a place on the team by earning a spot on the 2008 squad as
an all-purpose player.
It also marks the fourth straight season a Wesley College player has been named to the squad.
Beavers (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) adds another honor to go along with his second consecutive ACFC Special Teams Player of the Year honor and a spot on the D3football.com All-South Region First Team after a run through the record books in 2008. The speedster now holds the NCAA Division III career marks for kick return touchdowns 10 and total runbacks for touchdowns 13.
This year, Beavers returned a kick and a punt for
touchdowns against the Apprentice School,
consecutive kickoffs at Webber International, and a punt at Lake
Erie College. His 98-yard kickoff return against Mary Hardin-Baylor
set a school record for longest return and established the new
Division III record with as his fifth kickoff return score of the
year. He led Division III in kick return average at 39.5 and
averaged over 29 yards per punt return.
Beavers also started at receiver for the Wolverines, leading the team with 598 yards and tying for the team lead with 30 receptions and six touchdowns.
Beavers ended his career with 2,366 receiving yards, second all-time at Wesley. He finished his career seventh all-time with 126 career receptions.
With 41 career touchdowns between receiving, kick and punt returns, Beavers is the all-time leader in ACFC history in touchdowns scored. His 5,373 all-purpose yards are also a conference record.
Beavers follows Bryan Robinson (2007) and two-time team member Mario Harris (2006, 2005) to extend Wesley's current streak to four straight years with a player honored. Previously, former Wolverines Jason Visconti (2001), Sean McCullin (1999), Nate Casella (1997) and Demetrius Stevenson (1996) earned places on the AFCA All-America Team.
Salisbury University senior defensive end Jarrell Chandler became
the 13th All-American in program history as he was named to the
2008 Division III All-American first team by the American Football
Coaches Association (AFCA) on Wednesday. His distinction marks the
ninth AFCA All-American first team selection in Sea Gull football
history and the first since Byron Westrbrook was honored in '06.
Chandler was one of 11 members named to the Division III All-American defensive team. He is one of three defensive linemen on the first team as he joins Wabash's Jared Lange and California Lutheran's Jacob Calderon. Chandler and Wesley's Larry Beavers (All-Purpose Specialist) were the only two members selected to the first team from the Atlantic Central Football Conference (ACFC).
Chandler had an outstanding year for the Sea Gulls. The 2008
All-South Region first team
selection ranks fourth in the nation for tackles for loss average
per game (2.15) and 15th in the nation for sacks per game (0.95).
The Salisbury, Md., product is ranked sixth in the ACFC in tackles
(64) and tackles per game (6.40). While being honored to the 2008
All-ACFC first team, he was tied for first in sacks (9.5). Chandler
also leads the ACFC in tackles for loss average per game and is
second in tackle for loss yards (90).
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best - the coaches themselves. The AFCA currently selects only a first team.
