#5 WESLEY WRANGLES AGGIES 31-13

Game Stats

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Wesley College's Shane McSweeny (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) tossed three touchdowns, including two to Ellis Krout (Dallas, Texas/Roosevelt) as the fifth ranked Wolverines defeated Delaware Valley 31-13.

Wesley (3-0) led 24-0 after three quarters and the Wolverine defense put an end to what seemed like a traditional fourth quarter comeback in the series with the Aggies.  In 2007, the Wolverines scored 17 points to come from behind and last season, Delaware Valley (2-1) used 15 fourth quarter points to pull out a win.

This season, though, Wesley's lead proved too big to overcome.  After a scoreless first quarter, the Wolverines capped a 14-play, 98-yard drive with 20-yard field goal by Collin Blugis (Odenton, Md./Arundel) for a 3-0 lead with 7:44 left in the half.

Later in the quarter, McSweeny hooked up with Barry Garrard (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) on a 10-yard touchdown pass with 3:13 to go.  Wesley then forced the Aggies to punt and took over with less than a minute left at the Delaware Valley 31.  Five plays later it was Krout on the receiving end of a three yard touchdown from McSweeny for a 17-0 lead with just 11 seconds to play in the first half.

After catching a short score in the first half, Krout hauled in a 61-yard touchdown in the third quarter to put the Wolverines up 24-0.

Delaware Valley finally got onto the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter with the first touchdown against the Wesley defense in 2009.   Mike Isgro hit Chad Peterman for a 28 yard score and cut the Wesley lead to 24-6 with 13:41 remaining in the game after a failed two-point conversion.

The Wolverines were forced to punt on their next drive, but the Aggies fumbled the return and Yvenel Sainsume (Lincoln, Del./Milford) dove on the ball at the Delaware Valley 12 to regain possession for Wesley.  Garrard picked up seven on first down and McSweeny claimed the final five on second down for a 31-6 advantage.

With only 1:20 left in the game, Wesley attempted a 50-yard field goal that came up short and Charles Squitiere returned it 100 yards for a late touchdown and a 31-13 final score.

McSweeny finished the game 17-of-24 for 173 yards and three touchdowns.  He added another 47 yards rushing.  Krout caught four passes for 83 yards and two toucdowns.  Abeeb Badmus (Sharon Hill, Pa./Interboro) led a ground game that featured eight different rushers.  Badmus ran for 59 yards on 12 carries.

Linebacker Jeff Morgan (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) returned from injury to register a pair of sacks. Marcus Wilson (Pennsauken, N.J./Camden Catholic) had a team-high eight tackles.  D3football.comTeam of the Week honoree Mike Asiedu (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton) made seven stops, including 1.5 for loss and half a sack.

While the defense had its 166:19 run without allowing a touchdown broken, Wesley forced the Aggies into five turnovers.  The Wolverines recovered three other fumbles in addition to Sainsume's recovery and lineman Chris Mayes (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) registered his first career interception in the first half.

The defense also kept the Aggies out of the redzone all afternoon and limited them to just 59 yards on 31 rushes.

Delaware Valley's Isgro was 22-of-34 for 282 yards, one touchdown and one interception.  While running back Matt Cook led the team with five receptions, he was limited to just 17 rushes for 46 yards.

Kyle Gesswein and Chris James had nine tackles apiece for the Aggie defense.

The Wolverines complete a three game road trip next weekend at LaGrange.

BUILDERS OPEN HOME SCHEDULE WITH 67-13 WIN OVER GEORGE MASON

Game Stats

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Apprentice School football team opened its home schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 67-13 victory over George Mason University at Apprentice Field.

Senior Sam Arnold started the scoring for the Builders finishing a 58-yard drive with a 10-yard run at the 12:21 mark.  Arnold ran for 73 yards on 10 carries in the game.

Following a George Mason punt, freshman Chris Virgin scored on a one-yard run which started a three touchdown in 1:57 spurt for the Builders.  Freshman Anthony Duckworth returned the ensuing punt 54-yards for a touchdown to lead 19-0 with 7:25 left in the first quarter.  On the ensuing kickoff junior Bryan Cain picked up a fumble and returned it 17 yards to give the Builders a 26-0 lead with 7:11 left in the first quarter.

Virgin took care of three of the next four touchdowns for the Builders on runs of 48, 25 and 80 yards.  Fellow freshman Louis Norwood mixed in a 39-yard interception return for the Builders as they scored the most points in a game since the end of the 2007 season when they lost a 61-55 four overtime contest to Chowan University.

The Builders gained 344 yards on the ground with Virgin leading the way with 157 yards on five carries and four touchdowns.  Those four touchdowns are the second most by an individual in one game since 1985.  Apprentice School (1-2) only threw three passes in the game, completing two for 59 yards.

"The guys were very focused for the entire 60 minutes today and it showed," said Apprentice School Head Coach Mike Vite.  "It's always good to play everybody on the roster and we got accomplished everything we wanted to today to get the job done."

Next up for the Builders will be a trip to face Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham on Saturday, September 26 at 1 pm.

SALISBURY FALLS IN 3OT THRILLER 27-21

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Senior defensive end Paul Cynewski (Moorestown, N.J.) collected a game-high 15 tackles and had one sack but it was not enough as the Salisbury University football team dropped a tough non-conference, triple-overtime decision to Christopher Newport University, 27-21, on Saturday afternoon in front of 5,265 on Family Weekend at POMOCO Field. The game saw six fumbles altogether as the two teams combined for 14 sacks for 77 yards.

Salisbury (1-2) was propelled in the contest by Cynewski and the rest of its defense. The unit was consistent in being resilient time after the time as the squad shunned the Captains in numerous critical situations. The biggest stop of the contest came with less than one minute remaining in the fourth quarter. After a failed offensive drive, Salisbury's defense was greeted with the Captains beginning a drive at the Sea Gull 36-yard line. CNU running back Corey Legister opened up the drive with a 9-yard rush but it was all he would get on the drive as SU sent the game into overtime with three consecutive stops at the line of scrimmage.

The defense had eight players notch at least eight tackles in the game. Salisbury was led by Cynewki, who collected 11 solo tackles and had three tackles for losses. Senior linebacker Tom Fontaine (Philadelphia, Pa.) contributed with 11 tackles (10 solo), while senior linebacker Eric Arndt (Waldwick, N.J.) had one sack for 7 yards, one of his 10 tackles on the day. SU was also aided by the performances of sophomore defensive back Ricky Cassidy (Edgewater, Md.) and junior linebacker Justin Chura (Lothian, Md.) who both had nine tackles, and junior defensive lineman Riley Fritts' (Columbia, Md.) eight tackles and two sacks.

Salisbury looked to win the game in the early stages of the first overtime when the Sea Gull defense forced the Captains into their fourth turnover on downs of the game. The offense moved the ball just enough to set up sophomore kicker Tommy Kowalick (Sterling, Va.) for a 29-yard field goal attempt to win the game, but the Captains would stay alive after a member of the defense got just enough on the ball to send it short of the crossbar.

On the second possession of overtime, Bryan Woolson (White Hall, Md.) ran in from 25-yards out to force the Captains into having to score a touchdown. The favor was quickly returned as Corey Legister bulled in for a 1-yard touchdown moments later to send the game to a third extra session.

In the third overtime, Christopher Newport was granted the ball first. On the eighth play of the drive, Monsiva Woelfel scored the Captains' third rushing touchdown of the game. Salisbury was unable to move the ball on its last possession, and on a fourth-and-2 play the Captains claimed the victory after Bryan Vaughn took down Salisbury quarterback Sean Kelly(Fallston, Md.) just short of the first down.

Salisbury was propelled on offense by Kelly, who threw for 109 yards and one touchdown. Kelly, who made his first career start in the contest, continued his impressive day with 37 yards rushing on the ground. Randal Smedley (Frederick, Md.) (one touchdown) led the SU backfield with 71 yards on 12 carries, while Woolson contributed with 46 yards and one score.

Salisbury returns home on Saturday, Sept. 26, to host St. John Fisher College at 1 p.m. The meeting will be the second contest between the two squads and the first since SU pinned a 58-52 four-overtime decision on the road at SJFC last season.

Brockport Scores Late To Beat Frostburg State 37-32

Game Stats

Brockport, N.Y. - Jake Graci tossed the game-winning touchdown with just 33 seconds remaining to give Brockport a 37-32 non-conference victory over Frostburg State Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats (0-3) had taken the lead on the ensuing possession when freshman kicker Zachary Beukers (Lusby, Md./Calvert) kicked an 18-yard field goal with 1:45 left to hand the visitors a 32-31 lead. However, the Golden Eagles (2-0) quickly moved the ball down the field for the game-winning touchdown, covering 44 yards on six plays.

The game went back-and-forth throughout, featuring seven lead changes and a combined 921 yards in total offense by the two teams. The Bobcats scored on 6-of-12 possessions while Brockport scored on 6-of-13.

The Frostburg State offense exploded for a season-high 480 yards of total offense, the most since 2002, including 289 through the air and 191 on the ground.

Freshman quarterback Phoenix Butler-Poole (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) tossed for all 289 yards on 23-of-43 pass attempts with four touchdowns, becoming just the fifth player in school history with four or more passing touchdowns in a contest.

Butler-Poole spread the ball around, connecting with seven different players on the afternoon. Freshman Christian Cook (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) led the team with eight receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown while senior Avery Willie (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) caught five balls for 80 yards and a score.
The backfield tandem of junior Anton Wade (Baltimore, Md./Patterson) and Anthony King (Germantown, Md./Northwest) ran for 89 and 87 yards, respectively.

The first half saw most of the scoring as the teams combined for 40 points, including an FSU 23-17 halftime lead.

The Bobcats scored on their final four drives of the opening half and amassed 287 yards in total offense. Butler-Poole tossed three first half touchdowns and the Bobcat defense held the Golden Eagles to just 30 yards on the ground.

With Brockport up 10-0, the Bobcats used a nine-play 65-yard drive late in the first quarter to get on the board. Butler-Poole connected with sophomore Derek Sheely (Germantown, Md./Northwest) on a five-yard touchdown as FSU slimmed the deficit to 10-6.

After the Bobcat defense forced the Golden Eagles to turn the ball over on downs, FSU gathered a 15-play 65-yard drive that covered 6:41 for its second touchdown. Butler-Poole found Cook for an eight-yard touchdown pass and a 13-10 lead.

Beukers booted a 25-yard field goal with 2:39 left, but Graci threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Matt Newman with 1:02 left in the half to put the Golden Eagles up 17-16.

FSU came right back and scored 45 seconds later with just 17 second left to close out the half when Butler-Poole found Willie for a 22-yard scoring toss to give the visitors a 23-17 lead the break.

The Golden Eagles came out of the break with momentum as they scored two-straight touchdowns in the third quarter for a 31-23 edge.

The Bobcats answered with a 66-yard drive in eight plays, capped by Butler-Poole's fourth touchdown toss of the game, this time a five yard jump ball to senior Ali Konteh (Hyattsville, Md./Northwest).

The fourth quarter started slow until FSU mounted its sixth scoring drive of over 60 yards, this time a 10-play 61-yard march that led to Beukers go-ahead field goal.

After a short kickoff to the FSU 44 gave Brockport great field position, the hosts needed just six plays to find the endzone for the winning score.

Graci finished with 344 yards passing and five touchdowns to power the Brockport attack. Felipe Diaz and Hector Rosas each caught eight passes and two touchdowns.

On defense, Frostburg State was led by sophomore linebacker Travis Blair (Upper Marlboro, Md./Oxon Hill) with 11.5 tackles. Sophomore defensive back Jim Lohr (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made 6.5 tackles including a third quarter interception.

The Bobcats return to the field next Saturday at Widener at 1:00 pm.
