WESLEY KNOCKS OFF BUILDERS 39-0
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Junior quarterback Shane McSweeny accounted for the four offensive touchdowns on Saturday for fifth-ranked Wesley College as they defeated The Apprentice School 39-0 at Apprentice Field.
Wesley took its first possession and drove 55 yards in six plays with McSweeny connecting with Ellis Krout on a 21-yard scoring pass for a 7-0 lead with 11:21 left in the first. The Wolverines only had the ball for 3:46 of the first quarter which ended with the 7-0 advantage.
In the second quarter, Wesley turned the ball over on two of its first three possessions while holding the Builders to a fumble, a punt and a missed field goal. The Wolverines took possession after the missed field goal on the Builders 20 and McSweeny found DeAndrew Fowlkes on an 80-yard touchdown strike for a 14-0 lead with 7:02 left in the half.
After a Builder punt gave the Wolverines possession on their 47, McSweeny and Krout connected again on a 47-yard scoring pass to give Wesley a 20-0 lead after a failed conversion attempt with 3:33 left in the half.
To start the second half, Wesley took almost six minutes off the clock on an 11-play, 72-yard scoring drive as McSweeny recovered his own fumble and banged his way in from the three-yard line with 8:59 left to go up 27-0.
From that point, the Wolverine defense got into the scoring column as Marcus Wilson returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown on the Builders next series to take a 33-0 lead with 7:50 left in the third. In the fourth, Aaron Benson returned an interception 62 yards for the final touchdown in the 39-0 victory.
Leading the Builders on the ground was senior Sam Arnold with 51 yards on 24 carries, while freshman Chris Virgin was next with 32 yards on nine carries. Defensively, senior Jeremy Drayton was the game-high tackler with 10 while sophomore Jovan McCamey was next with five and a sack and freshman Aaron Finley also had five including a fumble recovery.
"They played with a lot of heart and emotion today," said Apprentice School Head Coach Michael Vite. "I am very proud of the effort today. They proved to themselves that they can play with anyone when they bring that much heart and emotion into a game."
The Builders are off next week before visiting Lake Wales, Florida for a 1 pm matchup with Webber International on October 31.
SLOW START DOOMS SALISBURY IN 28-7 LOSS TO LAKE ERIE
PAINESVILLE, Ohio - For the first time in 27 years, the Salisbury University football team found itself playing a contest in the state of Ohio, but the road trip did not translate into a victory as the Sea Gulls dropped a 28-7 decision to Division II opponent Lake Erie College on Saturday afternoon at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
Salisbury (3-3, 1-0 Atlantic Central Football Conference) struggled offensively in the game as Lake Erie (5-3) limited the Sea Gulls to just 207 total yards. SU scored its one touchdown in the game when sophomore slot back Tyler Curley (Ellicott City, Md.) caught a 39-yard pass from junior quarterback Sean Kelly (Fallston, Md.) in the third quarter. The score capped SU's longest drive of the game (eight plays, 75 yards).
The Sea Gulls were paced in the game by sophomore slot back Randal Smedley (Frederick, Md.), who rushed for a team-high 70 yards on 14 carries. Junior slot back Bryan Woolson (White Hall, Md.) picked up 23 yards on the ground while senior slot back Valdase Morris (Salisbury, Md.) caught four passes for 33 yards. Kelly finished the game 10-for-20 passing for 96 yards.
The Salisbury defense was anchored by senior defensive back Antoine Cuff (Landover, Md.), who had a team-high eight tackles. Junior linebacker Justin Chura (Lothian, Md.) and senior defensive back Brandon Hudson (Salisbury, Md.) each posted seven tackles while sophomore defensive back Ricky Cassidy (Edgewater, Md.) had six.
SU came out of the gates slow as the Sea Gulls struggled to move the ball and found themselves down by three scores, 21-0, after just one quarter of play. Lake Erie benefitted from three big touchdown runs in the frame, including 26 and 48-yard scampers by quarterback Sean Bedevelski. Lake Erie tacked on a touchdown in the latter stages of the second quarter to bring the deficit to four touchdowns by halftime. The 28 points scored by LEC were the most points given up before halftime by an SU defense since 2005.
The two teams did not manage to make any noise on the scoreboard in the third quarter but SU would break break through on Curley's touchdown with 14:51 remaining in the game. The SU defense played well in the second half as the squad yielded just 82 yards. The Sea Gull defense has only given up points in the fourth quarter in two games this season and holds a 67-21 scoring advantage in the final frame.
The Storm was aided by the performances of Bedevelski, who used 10 carries to collect 127 yards and two scores. The senior was also effective through the air as he was 14-for-24 with 225 yards passing and one score. The Lake Erie defense was propelled by Kevin Chapman (11 tackles), Derrick Clement (10 tackles, one sack) and Kenneth Gunn (two tackles, one interception).
Salisbury returns home on Saturday, Oct. 24, to host Union (N.Y.) College on Homecoming Weekend. The game is slated to begin at noon in Sea Gull Stadium. The two teams have not played since 1983, a span of 26 years, when the Dutchmen defeated the Sea Gulls, 23-21 in the NCAA tournament.
ITHACA HOLDS OFF FROSTBURG STATE 20-10
FROSTBURG, Md. - Brian Grastorf threw for all
three Ithaca touchdowns and the Bombers sealed a 20-10 win over
Frostburg State with a time consuming fourth-quarter drive, on a
cold Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
With Ithaca (5-2) up 13-10 early in the fourth quarter, Grastorf
led the Bombers on a 14-play 71-yard drive that consumed 7:16 of
the final quarter. Grastorf capped the drive with a 10-yard
touchdown to Dan Higgins for a 20-10 lead. The IC defense then
forced a Bobcat turnover and a punt on their final two drives to
seal the win.
Ithaca scored on the game's opening drive, moving 71 yards in 3:54
for a 6-0 lead. Grastorf found Dan Ruffrage for a six-yard
touchdown, but Andrew Rogowski's kick failed.
Two drives later, FSU capitalized on it's best field position of
the afternoon. After an Ithaca punt traveled just 16 yards,
Frostburg State took over at the Ithaca 44 and seven plays later,
freshman kicker Zachary Beukers (Lusby, Md./Calvert) booted a
28-yard field goal to narrow the gap to 6-3.

sophomore quarterback Josh Volpe (Germantown, Md./Northwest) found
freshman Christian Cook (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) for a
22-yard touchdown on fourth down to bring the Bobcats to within
three, 13-10.
The Bombers then moved down to the Bobcat 28-yard line on it's next
drive but junior Terryl Monroe (Temple Hills, Md./Dematha)
intercepted a Grastorf pass and gave the ball back to FSU. The
Bobcats appeared to be driving for the go ahead score, marching
down to the Ithaca 29, but FSU failed to convert of fourth down and
handed the ball back to Ithaca. IC then moved 71 yards for the
game's final touchdown a 20-10 lead.
Ithaca's offense totaled 354 yards and scored a touchdown in every
quarter but the third. Grastorf threw for 192 yards on 18-of-30

109 on the ground and 127 through the air. Volpe completed 18-of-30

linebacker George Feiser (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) led all
players with 11 total tackles, while Monroe made 10 stops.
