Five-peat Conference Titles As Wesley Knocks Off Salisbury 30-12

Boxscore

Salisbury Story

DOVER, Del. - The third-ranked Wesley College football team clinched its fifth straight Atlantic Central Football Conference Championship with a 30-12 win over Salisbury in the Route 13 Rivalry.

It was Wesley's 15th consecutive conference win, dating back to 2005.

Salisbury appeared to grab the momentum at the beginning of the game with a 37-yard kick return by Jonathan Briscoe and three plays later the Sea Gulls were on the Wesley 36.  However, on the next play, Sean Kelly lofted a pass short and Aaron Benson (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) went up to get it for his fourth interception of the year and returned it 31 yards to the Wesley 46.

The Wolverine offense then went on a nine-play, 54-yard drive.  On the final play of the drive, Shane McSweeny (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) threw to Sean McAndrew (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township), who made a one-handed grab for the score eight yard touchdown.

The score stood at 7-0 in the second quarter when a 30-yard pass from Kelly to Tyler Curley set up a four yard touchdown run by Warren Anderson.  Dakevis Howard (Wilmington, Del./Concord) blocked the extra point attempt and Wesley remained on top 7-6 with 11:42 left in the half.

The two squads then traded turnovers, with Wesley regaining possession on a fumble recovery by Howard off a forced fumble by Chris Mayes (Waldorf, Md./Westlake).

McSweeny dialed McAndrew's number again, firing a five yard laser to the tight end for his second touchdown of the day and a 14-6 Wesley lead.

A tackle for loss by Mike Asiedu (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton) and a sack by Mike Ward (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) on the next Sea Gull series forced a punt and Wesley took over at its own 24.  On the first play, Aaron Jackson () broke containment on the left side and found the corner for a 76-yard touchdown run to put the Wolverines ahead 21-6 at the half.

Wesley was forced to punt on the opening drive of the second half, but received more heroics from Howard, who forced and recovered a fumble on the return to give the Wolverines the ball at Salisbury's 43.   A 37-yard rush by McSweeny set up a nine-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Bacote (Burlington, N.J./Lenape Regional) as the Wolverines went ahead 28-6.

Salisbury tried to mount a comeback, scoring on a six yard rush by Valdase Morris, but had more problems with the point after. The Sea Gulls went for two and Asiedu intercepted Kelly's pass and returned it 100 yards for a 30-12 lead to cap the scoring.

Mayes had a monster game for the Wesley defense.  The sophomore end led the team with nine tackles, eight solo, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.

Asiedu, Marcus Wilson (Pennsauken, N.J./Camden Catholic) and Ward all had 2.5 tackles for loss as the Wolverines tallied 16 tackles for loss in the contest.  Wesley also forced four fumbles in the game, with Mayes, Asiedu, Howard and Reggie Millner (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) all separating Sea Gulls from the ball.

The Wolverine defense limited Salisbury's option running game to just 84 yards on 39 carries and just 197 yards of total offense.

The Wolverines, however, rushed for 206 yards on the day.  Jackson led the attack with his second straight 100-yard game, rushing 19 times for 127 yards.

McSweeny added 78 yards on the ground and added 161 yards passing and three touchdowns.

Gene Knight (Baltimore, Md./Overlea), McAndrew and Leonard Stevenson (Nanjemoy, Md./Lackey) all had three catches.

Morris and Bryan Woolson paced the Sea Gulls with 44 yards apiece on the ground and Ricky Cassidy led the defense with a game-high 10 tackles.

Wesley will look for another win with its third straight home game, hosting Lake Erie College on November 7.

FROSTBURG FALLS TO D2 11TH-RANKED UNC PEMBROKE 52-7

Boxscore

FROSTBURG, Md. - The No. 11 ranked UNC Pembroke Braves amassed nearly 400 yards in total offense as they defeated the Frostburg State University Bobcats 52-7 in non-conference football action, Saturday afternoon.

Eleven different players carried the ball for the Braves (8-1), who racked up 265 yards on the ground. UNCP entered the contest ranked eighth in NCAA Division II in rushing offense. Keith Gore led the team with 85 yards on nine carries and a touchdown, while Rashon Kennedy finished with 70 yards on 15 rushes and two scores.

Pembroke captured the early lead just under two minutes into the game. After holding FSU to just six yards on its first possession, UNCP's D.J. Ellerbe blocked the punt and recovered it in the endzone for a quick 7-0 lead.

The Braves added to their lead early in the second quarter when quarterback Cory Smith connected with St. Anthony Loyd for an 11-yard touchdown that put the visitors up 14-0.

Frostburg State (0-8) capitalized on a UNC Pembroke fumble for its only touchdown of the contest. Senior Mike Iheakanwa (Lantham, Md./Duval) stripped Smith and recovered the ball at the Pembroke 28-yard line. After a holding penalty on UNCP, junior tailback Anthony King (Germatown, Md./Northwest) scampered 18 yards for an FSU touchdown.

However, UNCP scored on its final two drives of the second half for a 24-7 halftime lead. Kennedy found the endzone from two yards out and Taylor Baskett booted a 24-yard field goal with 30 seconds left.

The second half was dominated by the Braves as they scored four touchdowns, two in each quarter. Pembroke received the second half kickoff and drove 69 yards on seven plays for it's first score of the half. Backup quarterback Garrett Sutphen tossed a 23-yard touchdown to L.J. Johnson for a 31-7 lead. On its next drive, UNCP scored again, this time Daniel Williams scored from a yard out to cap a seven-play 45-yard drive for a 31-7 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, Gore finished off the game's longest drive (10 plays and 73 yards) with a 26-yard touchdown run. Kennedy later scored the final touchdown, a two-yarder, for the 52-7 win.

Frostburg State was limited to 86 yards in total offense by the ninth-ranked Pembroke defense. Sophomore quarterback Josh Volpe (Germantown, Md./Northwest) threw for 45 yards on 6-of-12 attempts. Senior wideout Makiha Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Forest Park) hauled in four balls for 33 yards while Anthony ran five times for 22 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Tavis Blair (Upper Marlboro, Md./Oxon Hill) led the Bobcats with 12 tackles, 1.5 TFL and one sack.

Frostburg State hits the road next Saturday when travels to Newport News Apprentice for a 1:00 pm kickoff.

Builders Fall 17-14 At Webber International

Boxscore

LAKE WALES, Fla. - Mason Prater's 47-yard field goal with 1:36 left proved to be the final margin as the host Webber International Warriors edged the Apprentice School Builders 17-14 at Legion Field.

After holding the Builders on their first possession, the Warriors marched 92 yards in 10 plays to take a 7-0 lead on a Malcolm Solomon nine-yard run.  Quarterback Torrence Moise was 3-for-3 for 43 yards and ran for 14 yards on that drive.

Apprentice School's defense kept the Warriors in check the remainder of the first half.  Florida natives Jeremy Drayton and Johnathan Jones combined to stop Matt Davidson on a fourth down and five early in the second quarter to force Webber to turn the ball over on downs.  The offense responded with eight straight running plays to push the ball down to the Webber 19.  From there freshman Nicholas Foor connected on a 36-yard field goal to cut the Webber lead to 7-3 with 7:03 left in the half.  Quarterback Phil Caralla kept the drive going with a pair of conversions on a pair of quarterback sneaks on a third down and a fourth down and one.

That's the way the score stood through the third quarter as the Builders used a drive that spanned almost five minutes going into the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 7-6 on a 40-yard field goal from Foor with 14:06 left in the game.  Reggie George gained 20 of his game-high 59 yards on that drive, while Caralla connected with Bryan Cain twice including a key fourth down and ten from the Webber 42 that went for 16 yards to keep the drive alive.

The hosts responded with a seven-play, 81-yard scoring drive that ended with a 30-yard completion from Moise to Jamal Rodman with 10:31 left in the game.  Moise kept his poise in that drive connecting on 6-of-6 passes for 72 yards to put the Warriors up 14-6.

After forcing the Builders to turn the ball over on downs with 5:44 left, the Warriors took over four minutes off the clock running the ball 27 yards to set up Prater's 47-yard field goal for a 17-6 lead.

The Builders responded with a touchdown as Cain's 32-yard kickoff return gave the Builders possession inside Webber territory at their 48 with 1:26 left.  Caralla connected with James Abbs on a 40-yard completion where he out jumped a defender and brought the ball over the head of the defender for the reception at the Webber 8-yardline.  After two incomplete passes, Caralla took matters into his hands and ran it in from the eight with a minute left.  The two-point conversion pass to Teo Ellis was good cutting the deficit to 17-14.

Unfortunately for the Builders it wasn't meant to be as the onside kick attempt bounced out of bounds and the hosts were able to run out the clock.

The Builders defense stood strong in the near 90 degree heat of Lake Wales holding Webber International to 243 yards of total offense, including 69 rushing.  The three scoring drives for Webber combined for 200 yards, while for the better part of the game the Builders kept them in check.  Drayton was the leading tackler for the Builders with nine, while Al Little had eight and Jovan McCamey added seven.

Offensively, George was the leading rusher in the game with 59 yards, while Florida native Sam Arnold was next with 57.  Caralla threw for 117 yards as he connected with Cain four times for 46 yards.

Next up for the Builders will be the final Atlantic Central Football Conference game of the year hosting Frostburg State University in a 1 pm kickoff on November 7.
