Frostburg State 35, Apprentice School 30
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Anthony King and Anton Wade ran for a pair of touchdowns each as the visiting Frostburg State Bobcats held off a late rally from the Apprentice School to pull out a 35-30 victory at Apprentice Field on Saturday.
The Builders took their opening possession on Frostburg's 36 and was held to a 32-yard Nicholas Foor field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 10:28 left in the first quarter.
Frostburg then answered with an 11-play, 74-yard drive capped off by King with a 28-yard touchdown run with 4:15 left for a 7-3 lead. After pinning the Builders on its six yard line, the Bobcats took advantage of a short field as Wade ran in from the one to cap off a 22-yard drive for a 14-3 lead with 11:34 left in the half.
Apprentice School answered quickly as Phil Caralla connected with Bryan Cain on a 59-yard scoring pass on the Builders first play to cut the deficit to 14-10 with 11:10 left. That pass was the longest by the Builders this season, topping a 45-yard connection to James Abbs against Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham.
The Bobcats answered with a drive of almost eight minutes as Wade scored on his second one-yard run to finish off a 74-yard, 14-play drive. Apprentice School stopped the Bobcats twice on the one before Wade pushed his way across on a third down.
Frostburg took advantage of a Builder turnover for a final score before halftime. After recovering a fumble on the Builder 39, King finished the scoring drive with a four-yard run with 38 seconds left in the half to give Frostburg a 28-10 advantage at the break.
In the third quarter, the Builders opened fast scoring on its first possession as Caralla found Teo Ellis on a 14-yard scoring pass with 10:07 left to cut the deficit to 28-17. After holding Frostburg on its first series, the Builders found the end zone again as Sam Arnold scored on a three-yard burst for a 28-23 advantage with 3:01 left.
The Bobcats hit the end zone on its first possession of the fourth quarter as Josh Volpe found Avery Willie on a 41-yard slant pass for a 35-23 lead with 11:21 left. Willie broke two tackles at the 25 and out-raced the Builders to the end zone.
Apprentice School had one last shot taking possession on its 18 yard line with 68 seconds left. Two Caralla to Ellis connections brought the ball to the Builder 46 before Caralla hit Abbs on a 47 yard pass down to the Frostburg seven. On the next play, Caralla scrambled looking for a connection in the end zone and eventually turned and ran it in from the seven with 23 seconds left for the 35-30 margin. Frostburg recovered the onside kick attempt and ran out the clock for the win.
Caralla threw a season-high 19 completions out of 30 passes for a season-best 284 yards. Cain caught seven passes for 108 yards and a touchdown, while Abbs caught six for 113 yards. They became the second pair of receivers to break 100-yards in receptions in the same game in the last two years. Defensively, Jeremy Drayton was the leading tackler with 11 matching his season bests set against Malone and Lake Erie.
The Builders close out the season on November 14 when they host Southern Virginia University in the 60th annual Oyster Bowl at 1 pm.
Wesley 28, Lake Erie 13
DOVER, Del. - Senior Aaron Jackson (New Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) rushed for 184 yards and the defense turned in a pair of goal line stands as No. 3 Wesley defeated Division II Lake Erie 28-13.
The Wolverines (9-0) jumped ahead early with an eight play, 71 yard drive capped by 14 yard pass from Justin Sottilare (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) to Ellis Krout (Dallas, Texas/Roosevelt) midway through the period.
Later in the quarter, a Wesley fumble gave Lake Erie (7-4) the ball at the Wesley one yardline. On third and goal, however, Dean Hammel (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) intercepted a Sean Bedevelsky pass in the end zone.
Early in the second quarter, it appeared the Storm may score again, but Marcus Wilson (Pennsauken, N.J./Camden Catholic) blocked a field goal and Aaron Benson (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) returned it to the Lake Erie 30.
On the fourth play of the possession, Sottilare found Sean McAndrew (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) on the sideline and the big tight end chucked a defender and scored on a 12-yard play.
Wesley led 14-0, but the Storm drove down to the Wesley one yardline again. Lake Erie ran four times into the Wolverine defense and four times the defense stopped them short during the unit's second goal line stand of the afternoon.
The Storm appeared to steal momentum on the opening kickoff of the second half. Wade Bistor sent a high pop up down the field that landed in the center of the field and bounced right to a Lake Erie player at the Wesley 32. Bedevelsky found John Hokavar on a one yard pass in the back of the end zone to cut it to 14-7.
Wesley responded immediately with a touchdown drive of its own. A 22-yard run by Jackson set up a 15-yard pass by Sottilare to McAndrew for his second touchdown of the day and a 21-7 lead with 11 minutes left in the third quarter.
The Wolverines were headed for another potential score early in the fourth quarter when Steve Bensinger intercepted a Wesley pass and ran 84 yards down the sideline for the touchdown. Dakevis Howard (Wilmington, Del./Concord) blocked the extra point for Wesley's second blocked kick of the day and a 21-13 lead with 12:36 to play in the game.
The Storm drove into Wesley territory later in the period, but on fourth down, Mike Ward (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) and Jeff Morgan (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) threw back up quarterback Mike Krumpak to the turf for a five yard loss for a turnover on downs.
A 31-yard pass from Sottilare to Krout on the next drive set up a six-yard touchdown run by Jackson to cap the scoring with 3:21 left in the game.
The Wolverine defense limited a Lake Erie offense that rushed for 219 yards per game to just 89 on the afternoon.
Sottilare completed 14-of-23 passes in his first career start for 176 yards and three touchdowns. Both Krout and McAndrew caught four passes.
Mike Asiedu (Yonkers, N.Y./Gorton) led the Wolverines with nine tackles and 1.5 for loss. Both Morgan and Chris Mayes (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) followed with eight apiece.
The Wolverines sacked the Storm quarterbacks six times on the afternoon. Mayes and Jeff Dorsey (Baltimore, Md./Woodlawn) had 1.5 apiece, while Morgan, Ward and Justin Strickland (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) had one apiece.
Bedevelsky, also Lake Erie's leading rusher, was limited to minus-four yards on the ground and completed 7-of-13 passes for 118 yards. Krumpak did not fare any better, going 3-of-7 for 28 yards.
Kevin Chapman led the Storm defense with nine tackles and a sack, while David Dunne had three for loss.
Wesley closes out the regular season with a nationally ranked NAIA Ohio Dominican team on November 14 at 1:00 PM at Scott D. Miller Stadium.
Notes:
- Chris Mayes moved into 10th place all-time at Wesley with 25 tackles for loss.
- Jackson's performance was his third straight game of at least 125 yards.
- Sottilare was making his first career start.
- Krout caught his 14th touchdown of the season, leaving him two shy of the team's single season record.
- With three more tackles for loss, Ward had 35 in his career, just 0.5 short of Ken Pippin for fifth all-time at Wesley.
Hampden-Sydney 59, Salisbury 14
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Sophomore defensive back
Ricky Cassidy (Edgewater, Md.) collected a career-high 11 tackles
and sophomore slot back Bryan Woolson (White Hall, Md.) rushed for
a game-high 72 yards, but it was not enough as the Salisbury
University football team dropped a 59-14 decision to No. 17
Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday afternoon at Lewis C. Everett
Stadium. The contest was the first between the two teams since 1990
and the first time SU has played against an Old Dominion Athletic
Conference opponent in the past 18 years.
Salisbury (4-5, 1-1 Atlantic Central Football Conference) found
itself in a deep hole to begin the game as Hampden-Sydney (9-0, 4-0
ODAC) posted the first five scores to take a commanding 31-0 lead.
Despite the scoring margin, the Sea Gulls were not fazed as they
opened up the second quarter with a pair of touchdowns.
Senior defensive back Brandon Hudson (Delmar, Md.) got the ball rolling for SU when he returned an HSC punt 33 yards to help set up a 29-yard touchdown score by Woolson. Woolson would then go on to pick up his second consecutive 29-yard score when five minutes later he returned to the end zone to bring the game within three touchdowns at halftime.
The three touchdown margin was as close as SU got the rest of the way as HSC used an impressive offensive performance in the second half to run away with the victory.
Woolson propelled the Sea Gulls in the game as he rushed for 72 yards on just five carries and two scores. SU was also aided by the performances of sophomore quarterback Kurt Purnell (Berlin, Md.) and junior super back Nick Coates (Huntingtown, Md.), who rushed for 31 and 29 yards, respectively. The receiving corps caught just five passes in the game but was led by sophomore wideout Colin Lanham (Cambridge, Md.). Lanham snagged one pass for 14 yards.
The SU defense was led by Cassidy's strong performance as his game-high 11 tackles proved to be his second consecutive week with double-digit tackles. The Sea Gulls were paced by junior linebacker Justin Chura (Lothian, Md.) and Hudson. Chura notched nine tackles in the game while Hudson (three pass breakups) had six of his own.
Salisbury will return home to host Frostburg State University in the 11th annual Regents Cup game on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. The Sea Gulls have won the last five meetings between the two schools and hold the series lead, 20-16. The contest marks the regular season finale for SU.
